Natural Site:

The Tswain / Soutpan Meteor Crater ensure an exciting outing for those intrigued

by geography. The crater was left by an asteroid which hit there 200 000 years ago.

The Tswaing crater is approximately the same size as the well-known Barringer

meteor crater in Arizona. The crater walls at Tswaing were originally about twice

as high as they are today. The crater is called Tswaing in seTswana, the local

language of the area, or Soutpan in Afrikaans. Both names mean Salt Pan

and this derives from the lake of salty water that fills the centre.

 

 

The Wonderboom Nature Reserve showcases one of the most amazing wonders by mother nature – a wild fig known worldwide as the Wonderboom (literally, miracle tree).

A 5,5 m diameter trunk at the heart of the Wonderboom is the remains of the original wild fig that began growing here over more than 1 000 years ago. Branches of this trunk first spread out radially but gradually drooped towards the ground, where they sent out roots from which sprang a circle of new trunks.

In time, two of the offspring produced a third generation. Today the Wonderboom has 13 distinct trunks that cover an area of 1,5 ha. The branches spread over an area of 50 m, and can provide enough shade for over 1 000 people.
